Organized by B/A+P’s Ecological Practices Research Group, HIVE CITY is a design competition for students to develop proposals to house an existing bee colony at Silo City, an emerging development in Buffalo. The competition was coordinated as a three-phase process. The first phase was a 24-hour charrette, from which four semi-finalist teams were selected. The second phase culminated in schematic design proposals, which were publicly presented by the student teams. From those four teams, a jury selected two teams to continue onto the final round of competition. The two finalist teams presented detailed proposals, including construction drawings and cost estimates. The winning project will be constructed in the summer of 2012, with sponsorship from Rick Smith and Rigidized Metals.
